company was established in 1737 by Thomas Wilson and it is now in the
hands of the sixth generation. The longevity of this family-based
company is one of the components that make it so unique.
Not only has Wilsons & Co. had success within their own business, but they have also expanded, and they now produce Fribourg & Treyer snuff. Fribourg & Treyer manufactured a range of renowned snuff between the years of 1720 and 1981.
There have been dramatic transformations in society in the nearly 300 years since the company was founded and Wilson & Co. has successfully adapted to these variations. Snuff is nowhere near as popular as it once was, and yet Wilson & Co. have battled the decline in demand for their products. They have attempted to modernise and revise the business in every possible way, right down to their packaging (which originally comprised of pigs� bladders!). Their in-house blends adapt on historically loved recipes.
Wilson & Co. snuff are categorised into four groups. Firstly, SP Varieties, which is a basic flavour using outstanding tobacco leaves. Secondly, Mentholated Snuffs, which are pleasantly mentholated. Thirdly, Scented Snuffs, which offer a diverse range of aromas. Finally, Fruit, Spice and Flower Flavours. These categories will satisfy a vast range of tastes.
The company is based in Sharrow Mill, which is a stunning building dating back to the 1700s. The mill is at the heart of the business as it is the location where it was first founded. The mill no longer functions via a water wheel, as it originally did, it now operates electrically; however, the excellent quality of their products has been upheld.
